Live with Purpose—Not Regret

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, ‘It might have been.’” – Kurt Vonnegut

Regret is one of the heaviest burdens we carry. It’s the “what if,” the “I wish I had,” the “why didn’t I?” that echoes through our memories and shadows our present. And while we can’t rewrite the past, we can make choices that shape a more intentional, meaningful future—a life without regret, and with purpose, well into our 100s.

The Age Brilliantly mindset encourages us to view our lives not as fixed stories, but as evolving journeys that we can redesign at any age. Living without regret doesn’t mean avoiding mistakes. It means aligning your daily actions with your values, growing from setbacks, and making the most of your time—whether you’re 30 or 80.

What We Regret Most—and What We Can Learn From It

A well-known study by psychologist Tom Gilovich at Cornell University revealed that people tend to regret inaction more than actions. In other words, it’s not the mistakes we make that haunt us—it’s the dreams we never chased, the words we never said, the chances we never took.

Another study published in Emotion journal by Shai Davidai and Thomas Gilovich found that our “ideal self” regrets—not living up to who we wanted to be—cause the deepest pain (source).

So how do you avoid looking back with regret? By consciously designing your life in alignment with your values and purpose—and doing it consistently.

Six Steps to Let Go of Regret and Build a Fulfilled 100-Year Life

1. Define Your Core Values and Ideal Self
Start by identifying the principles you want to live by. What truly matters to you—freedom, connection, growth, contribution? Use the Think2Perform Values Tool to clarify your top values. Let these guide your goals and decisions.

Ask yourself: What kind of person do I want to become at 90 or 100? What values do I want my life to reflect?

2. Take Action on Your “Someday” Goals—Today
What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t? Learn a language? Start a business? Write a book? Call someone? Schedule time for it now. Use tools like Notion or Todoist to break big goals into small steps.

If you’re unsure where to begin, write a letter to your future self using FutureMe. Let that person remind you of the life you’re capable of building.

3. Turn Regret Into a Teacher, Not a Roadblock
Reflect on what you regret—and mine it for insight. What did it teach you about your needs, values, or desires? Journaling apps like Day One or Penzu are great for processing lessons and reframing the past.

Studies show that people who practice self-compassion are more likely to grow from regret and less likely to get stuck in shame. Try guided meditations on Insight Timer to help shift your mindset.

4. Prioritize Experiences Over Things
People who live without regret tend to invest more in relationships, adventures, and learning—not possessions. This is echoed in the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which found that strong relationships and meaningful experiences—not wealth—are the key to long-term fulfillment.

Build a calendar of experiences that reflect your values. Use BucketList.org to stay inspired.

5. Embrace Continuous Reinvention
Life doesn’t have to peak at 40, 60, or even 80. You’re allowed to keep evolving. Take a course on Coursera or MasterClass. Join purpose-driven groups on Meetup or CoGenerate.

The Stanford Center on Longevity encourages rethinking life as multi-staged—not just education, work, and retirement, but a lifelong cycle of learning, creating, and contributing. That means you always have time to make new, fulfilling choices.

6. Build Your Legacy Now
Regret often stems from the feeling that we didn’t matter. So start contributing in a way that reflects your gifts and purpose. Volunteer through VolunteerMatch or mentor others on Score.

Create an ethical will—a document that shares your values and lessons with future generations. Tools like Everplans can help you organize your legacy with meaning.
