Frientimacy: The 3 Requirements of All Healthy Friendships

June 10, 2025 · Relationships

Friendship isn’t just a feel-good bonus—it’s essential to our health and well-being. In her eye-opening TEDx talk, author and connection expert Shasta Nelson introduces the concept of “frientimacy,” the deep, fulfilling closeness that defines our most meaningful friendships. According to Nelson, all healthy friendships are built on three pillars: positivity, consistency, and vulnerability. Without even one of these, relationships become unbalanced and struggle to grow deeper.

Nelson points out that many adults feel lonely—not because they lack people around them, but because they lack authentic connection. To build frientimacy, we must actively nurture friendships through shared joy, showing up regularly, and letting others see our true selves. “We don’t get healthy friendships by just hoping they happen,” she says. “We create them.”

Which of the three elements—positivity, consistency, or vulnerability—do you want to strengthen in your friendships?
